According to the sponsors, the UK records, set at least year's event, are 69.31m for the men and 38.74m for the women. Both fall short of the world records, set in Finland, where handsets were hauled 94.97m and 41.42m, respectively.

And if you just want to tip up and rid yourself of a stack of old, out-moded, unwanted phones, ActionAid will be happy to take them off your hands and make sure they're disposed of in as environmentally friendly a way as possible.

You can register for the championship at the event's website.
